Assessing the quality of recycling for footwear

Siyue Zhang

Siyue Zhang holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Science for Sustainability from King’s College London, UK, and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Hebei University of Science and Technology, China, and Federation University, Australia. She is a PhD researcher (DC12) in the SCARPA Doctoral Network, hosted by Maastricht University. Her research focuses on assessing the quality of footwear recycling, with particular attention to defining recycling quality and examining the factors that shape the quality of recycled materials across the footwear recycling value chain. She aims to develop an operational assessment framework that connects recycling quality with product, process, and application characteristics, supporting stakeholders in understanding the consequences of different choices and identifying opportunities to improve footwear circularity. Through interdisciplinary and industry collaboration, she is driven to make circularity and sustainability more measurable and actionable, contributing to a more circular footwear sector.
