Combined mechanical / solvent-based recycling

Allegra Magnetti

Allegra is a Materials engineer who obtained her Master’s degree from EPFL Switzerland, focusing on sport footwear sustainability and how product performance changes over its lifespan. Her SCARPA project addresses recycling technologies and aims to create a materials flowsheet for recycling TPU-based synthetic shoes and leather-based shoes, optimizing their mechanical and selective dissolution recycling pathways. The home institution, Re-Sport s.r.l, and the University of Bologna give her a head start due to pre-existing know-how on these two pathways. Meanwhile, at her host institution, EHU, chemical recycling will be included into the existing recycling flowsheet to increase purity and yield of recovered secondary materials. Moreover, she has been an athlete for most of her life. Therefore, footwear materials have always concerned her in terms of performance and durability. Within the SCARPA program, she is motivated to maximize the properties of secondary materials, impacting the performance of the next shoe generation.
